The best time to visit Chichen Itza splits into two questions, which season and which hour. The hour matters even more than the season, because the difference between opening time and midday is dramatic year round.

Best hour of the day

Arrive at opening. The first hour is cooler, far quieter and beautifully lit, and you can photograph El Castillo without crowds. By late morning the buses from the coast arrive, the plaza fills and the heat builds. If you cannot make the morning, the last ninety minutes before closing are the next best window.

Best season

The dry season, roughly from late autumn through spring, brings the most comfortable and reliable weather, with clear skies and lower humidity. The summer months are hotter and more humid, and the rainy season can bring afternoon showers, though mornings often stay clear. The dry season is also high tourist season, so the early arrival rule matters even more.

The equinox

Around the spring and autumn equinox, the famous serpent of light appears on El Castillo in the late afternoon. These are the busiest days of the year, so visit on the shoulder days just before or after if you want the effect with fewer people.
